a little about me...

The comment I hear the most as I work with children is “you are so patient.”   Patience comes from understanding.  I grew up in a large family and I have always been surrounded by many children.  When I say many, I mean many!  Currently I have 84 nieces and nephews, each who I know by name, and five beautiful children of my own, whom I adore.  Family and relationships are my most valued treasure.  Preserving this treasure is what led me to photography.

In 2001 I began my journey in the photography world as a way to hold on to the quickly fleeting moments of my young children’s lives, soon friends and family members began to ask me to create treasured portraits of their children.  In 2005 I obtained a business license and turned professional.  Since that time I have had a steadily growing small business that I never anticipated.

With my first commissioned job I immediately fell in love with the challenge to capture the emotion, interaction and relationship of those I photograph.  Whether it is a mother with a newborn, a couple on their wedding day or a self conscience teenager doing this for mom, the response is always the same, gratitude for a beautiful memory.

My name is Mary Kim Oswald and I am a professional photographer in Salt Lake City, Utah.  My journey in the photography world has led me to focus on Family and Child Photography.  I have developed a special appreciation and respect for children.  I understand that children are unpredictable and emotional and I love every minute I spend capturing their individual essence in a photograph.   When I look into a child’s eyes I see innocence, honesty and pure wonder at the world around them.   To capture these attributes propels me forward in my artistic pursuit in photography.  Families and relationships are meant to be treasured and I find it an honor each time I am asked to preserve this bond with a timeless portrait.

There is only one family that I dread working with, and that is my own family!  This is an image from our most recent attempt at a family portrait.  Our last family portrait was done when I was pregnant with the littlest guy in this image and it has taken until now, two years later, to try it again.  Ughhhh, perfection is hard to achieve when I'm in front of the camera.   Here we are, the Oswald's, all seven of us.  Can you see the stress in my face?  I was so worried about my little 18 month old looking at the camera and when we finally captured an image with him looking and even smiling just a bit, my 12 year decides to tell us what she really thinks.  This is definitely going in her wedding DVD when she gets married! Hee-hee.  Yea I could swap her with a different pose but I don't know, this seems more realistic and true to who we are. This is us raw, straight out of the camera.  I have not done any editing or tweaking in Photoshop to this image.   I think it will look great as a 36x24 don't you?
